ACID REFLUX, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is when the stomach produces excess hydrochloric acid and then existing inflammation and poor digestion forces such up the esophagus. The result is intense burning, pain, and in severe instances, vomiting. Frequent occurrences can lead to tissue damage and cancer of the esophageal lining. Nearly fifty percent of Americans suffer episodes of acid reflux, once a month or more. That stat goes way up during the holidays, and never more than on Thanksgiving.
Allopathic medicine treats acid reflux with repositioning, antacids, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and culprit food avoidance [⁷⁵]. Hospitals prescribe acid-reducing medication and PPIs to sixty-eight percent of their patients, regardless of clinical need [⁷⁶]. PPIs cause cancer [⁸⁴]. Never mind the fact that research has confirmed the suppression of healthy stomach acids disrupt intestinal flora increasing the risk of dangerous bacterial infections [⁷⁷].
While antacids temporarily relieve gastric distress, the body’s efforts to restore homeostasis and optimum digestion will inevitably result in hyperactive acid production. And so, the disease making cycle begins.
Eighty percent of your immune system belongs to the stomach lining and the miles of large and small intestine microvilli in-between your pie-hole and that other hole at the end. Some prescribed medications may cause stomach upset. And we all know overindulging like we tend to do on Thanksgiving, is another major culprit.
As it says on the label, I recommend using natural remedies to ease symptoms, rather than add another prescription or commercial OTC to your daily chemical intake.
Nature first, right.
Repositioning is important. Did you know that sleeping on your left side can prevent acid reflux by aiding in continued digestion and the emptying of the stomach while reducing pressure on your heart and pulmonary systems during sleep.
Considered a Pitta-to-Kapha disparity, Ayurvedic treatment of acid reflux focuses on rebalancing the disturbed dosha through nutrition, herbs, and bodyworks. A fifteen-minute walk in the morning and after dinner can do wonders by increasing blood flow that stimulates digestion and relieves stress. The extra exercise will also support your amazing immune system while helping to keep you svelte and sinewy.
While we are talking some simple exercise, Ardha Matsyendra Sana (Half Lord of the Fishes pose) massages and squeezes toxins from your liver, spleen, and stomach. It strengthens lower back muscles and increases blood flow to the intestinal tract. Hold for three-five minutes, breathing in through the nose and expelling through the mouth. Complete the round by alternating legs and twist in the opposite direction.

Many reflux sufferers unintentionally malign their partners with their reflux induced sleeping disorders and apnea. The following deep breathing exercise done just before bed can dispel much of the underlying digestive congestion and improve everyone’s quality of sleep.
Deep Breathing thirty minutes to an hour before bed relieves physical tension and releases neurotransmitters that help you relax. Being thrown from a sound sleep as hydrochloric acid burns its way up your throat, mouth, and nasal passages, is as horrifying and painful as it sounds. The goal is not going there.
But even after the horror of an acid reflux event (ARE) , do this practiced breathing technique with your sleeping partner to calm the body and realign the mind with restorative healing sleep. Believe me, it will do wonders for your loved one to know you care.
4-7-8
1. Begin by exhaling completely… all the way now. When it feels like there is nothing left in your lungs, try coughing out the last bit of air trapped low and deep inside.
2. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
3. Hold the breath for 7 seconds.
4. Exhale for 8 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 2 – 5 four to eight times.
Fennel Seed (Ferula ass-foetida) is a soothing digestive with expectorant properties, prized by ancient healers for its effectiveness. Fennel seeds come from a plant called Devils’ Dung (Asafoetida). For centuries, sap resin from the roots of this plant was used to treat dyspepsia, colic, cough, bronchitis, and nervous disorders. Because of the foul smell of Devil’s Dung, the seeds became more popular. In clinical studies, fennel seed, lemon balm, and German chamomile tea concoctions have shown colic and acid reflux relieving activity. Fennel seeds, when chewed or steeped, soothe stomach upset.
Massage
Mix 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil with a carrier castor seed oil and massage the stomach in gentle counter-clockwise circles. Do not press or knead the flesh of the abdomen. You don’t want to force that acid into the esophagus. The relaxing aroma combined with a gentle healing touch has shown to relieve stomach upset in people of all ages, including infants two weeks and older.
